Plenitude, a benefit corporation under Eni S.p.A., an Italian multinational energy company headquartered in Rome, boasts a unique business model that combines renewable energy production, the sale of energy solutions, and an extensive network of charging stations for electric vehicles. The company has become the main partner for the international endeavors of Olimpia Milano, the legendary 29-time Italian basketball champions. With this partnership, Plenitude intends to further advance a culture of sustainability and innovation through sports, which aligns with the company's goal as a benefit corporation to have a positive impact on society and the environment alongside its financial objectives.
In 2021, Plenitude became the first major energy firm to incorporate this purpose into its Articles of Association to officially become a benefit corporation. Plenitude and Olimpia Milano plan to collaborate on educational and energy training initiatives that align with the Armani Group's (Olimpia Milano's main sponsor) sustainability strategy. The company chose to partner with Olimpia Milano due to the team's prestige and recognition across Europe in the EuroLeague, the continent's largest basketball competition. Plenitude CEO, Stefano Goberti, expressed excitement about the partnership and the opportunity to promote sustainability through sports, especially basketball by stating, "We are excited to be supporting Olimpia Milano and furthering our commitment to spreading the culture of sustainability in sport as well – especially in basketball, which is considered one of the popular ways to bring communities together. Seeing such a well-known team sign with an organization that aims to make the world a more sustainable gives me hope that other teams may do the same thing soon too. On either end of the spectrum, Olimpia Milano and Plenitude, benefit from this partnership obviously monetarily for Olimpia Milano and the recognition for Plenitude but this decision is larger than just these two organizations. The role viewers will now have is bigger than sports with the influence to chose an ethical energy company that sponsors their favorite basketball team.

This decision not only benefits both organizations financially and in terms of recognition, but it also highlights the importance of making environmentally conscious choices in all aspects of life.

I think that this partnership is a great way to open up the sports industry to even more creative partnerships. In addition, there is definitely some crossover between the reputational gain each party receives from the other. Not only is it a nice thing to see, but it also brings attention to a company that promotes green energy. This is beneficial for the company because they are receiving more attention, but it also benefits the European club because they are viewed as a team that supports the idea of green energy. I think this partnership can only benefit Olimpia Milano as well because it shows they value something important. The public's perception of the club can only improve from this, although I don't know if that will increase things like ticket sales necessarily.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree that this might not necessarily increase ticket sales directly, but maybe (hopefully) with increased media attention, people will see Olimpia Milano as a club with good intentions which may result in for fans.
DeleteIt is cool to see such a well known and successful basketball team in Olimpia Milano partnering with a company that has such beneficial values. It is not something you see in sports much. I think this can only benefit the club. First, they bring in the revenue from the sponsorship. However, they also show fans that they are dedicated to making the world a better place, which could be very appealing to some people.

Doing so, it will make their fans become more aware of topics such as sustainability. It will significantly improve the perception of fans, which as a result should help increase their revenue and brand image.

ReplyDeleteI hope that this will bring in more sponsorships relating to sustainability, but I think Olimpia Milano will need to see how much they grow from this first partnership with Plentitude to see if this path is worth pursuing. However, I do think that this partnership will resonate with fans because Plentitude is all about making the world a better place, which will hopefully bring in more fans with the same agendas.
DeleteMilan made a good decision with this sponsorship, Plentitude is a prominent brand that also benefits from being a sustainability-based company. I think by promoting these sponsorships with specifically selected sustainability-based companies we will be able to bring a lot of awareness to the issue. Props to Milan for this move.
